Rockwell Rig – Maya

Please visit Colin Brown’s Demo Reel showcasing my Rockwell Rig in use! http://www.colin-brown.com(Individual shots below)

Welcome to the Rockwell Rig. I completed this rig a few months ago as R&D work. As I was going through Jason Schleifer Rigging Method’s, I needed a rig that I could work on concurrently to apply his techniques. I ended up changing things here and there, but it is very similar to his AFR rig. It has been through a few animators hands and I’ve fixed bugs, complaints, and added requests. Please share your comments on how to make Rockwell a better rig.

This the list of things I am going to change or add:

  • Update Rockwell with the Awesome Spine Setup. Finished Rockwell before the Awesome Spine setup was complete. Complete!
  • Update Rockwell with Awesome Arm Twist Setup. Basically taking the Awesome Spine and altering it to work with the upper and lower are twist.
  • Better UI, something that looks better and easier to use. The one I’ve included is rough but does the job.
  • New No Flip Knee Setup. This was the rig where I implemented my old method of No-Flip knees and found the error in extreme poses. So when back to a normal No-Flip system. But I want to apply my new method and see how it works out.
  • Simple Face Setup for expressions, and some much needed eye brows.

(I’ll add more as I think of it, feel free to post feature requests.)

Here is the file for Rockwell, contains the Rockwell Rig, pdf, and scripts (Download from Highend3D, because its easier to make updates): Rockwell_Rig

Scripts:

I put the scripts in my Scripts directory (Vista).
C:\Users\<user>\Documents\maya\scripts
That way when Maya starts they are sourced. To run the UI type: rockwellUI
You will need to select one of Rockwell’s Controllers first. This is so you can have multiple Rockwell’s in one scene with separate UI’s.

For the RefTool Script, type: refTool
Then browse for the Rockwell file, give a prefix name for the character, and click create Reference. In the future when I make changes to the rig all you have to do is replace the Rockwell file, run a Reload Reference and your animation will be updated with the new rig without damaging your animation.

Updates:

Version 1.00:

  • Initial Reslease

Version 1.01:

  • Added the Awesome Spine Setup to the Rockwell Rig, let me know of any errors.

  7. There are no face controls yet. When I do them I’ll add a more interesting face to animate.

  8. Hi,

I would like to constrain his hand control to an object (eg, for pull animation). After point constrained his hand (IK mode) to a cube, I can no longer set a key to his hand. It says “animCurve creation or connection”. Could you advise pls? Thanks!

  11. hey there!

Thought i’d say top amazin work on the rig. Its fantastic. ๐Ÿ™‚

Just a few questions though….Firstly, i cant get the UI script to work on Maya 2011, but works fine in 2010. Can this be fixed somehow?

Also, i was wondering, based on this great rig you have created, is it easy to make it drive or skinned to a normal biped model?

    Cheers!
